Putting your bike on an airplane by Maria

You need to tell the airline you're traveling on that you will bring a bike when you buy your ticket. It is different from airline to airline what they charge for a bike. Some don't charge anything, some charge up to around $100. Call the airline up and ask or check on the web before you buy ticket, it might make difference on the final flight-price.

The airline will normally tell you to turn the handlebars, take off the pedals and take the air out of the tires. Sometimes you need a box for the bike, sometimes you can give it in as it is.

Some people prefer to save money. They simply pack up the bike in a box as a second luggage. When they come to the check-in desk, and the airline-person asks "what is in the box", the answer could be 'art', 'climbing-equipment' or something more creative. Even if the box is a obious bike box it almost always works to say it is something different. You gotta be very unlucky or a bad liar if it does not work out.

If the bike is registred on the flight as a bike it is also insured. It happens sometimes that something gets bent during the flight. So it is up to you if you wanna run the risk.
